Regulations on the Items Taken into and out of Hong Kong,China |  |
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region imposes tough regulations on the import and export of prohibited/controlled items.
Prohibited/controlled items include dangerous drugs, psychotropic substances, controlled chemicals, antibiotics, firearms, ammunition, fireworks, strategic commodities, rough diamonds, animals, plants, endangered species, telecommunications equipment, game, meat and poultry.
The above items taken by visitors without valid license or permit into/out of Hong Kong SAR could be prosecuted, and such items seized and confiscated.
Visitors who take prohibited/controlled items are penalized according to applicable laws and regulations.

Entry permit
1. Persons who apply for "Hong Kong,China/Macao,China Pass" and entry permit for the first time
First-time applicant for "Hong Kong,China/Macao,China Pass" and entry permit must go in person to Entry/Exit Administration Office of his/her hukou city and submit the application. The materials required include the original copy and photocopy of his/her ID and Hukou Certificate (one single piece of A4 paper could be used), two 2-inch color passport photos ( photos can be taken on the site and photo fee is to be paid by the applicant himself/herself). Hong Kong,China entry permit is for only Hong Kong,China visit, while Macao,China entry permit for only Macao,China visit. It takes 10 working days for an application to be processed.
2. Persons who already have Hong Kong,China/Macao,China Pass and apply for entry permit again
The materials required include the applicant's valid ID and Hong Kong,China/Macao,China Pass. He/she can appoint a surrogate to act on his/her behalf. (Specific regulations on permit entry could differ according to cities, and the Entry/Exit Administration Office of the applicants hukou city can be contacted for details.) It takes 1 working day for an application to be processed.
[Note] For the Hong Kong,China/Macao,China Pass whose validity period is less than 6 months (3 months in some cities) or which does not contain a blank page for the entry permit, the application will be rejected. In that case, the applicants are treated as persons who apply for "Hong Kong,China/Macao,China Pass" and entry permit for the first time.
Transit and stay in Hong Kong,China with a passport
Transit passengers who hold a valid Chinese citizen passport and travel to other countries or regions via Hong Kong,China can stay in Hong Kong,China for up to 7 days without obtaining entry permit in advance each time they transit, if such passengers have the appropriate entry documents required by the destination and the confirmed onward bus/ship/air tickets.

Hong Kong, which means “fragrant harbor” in Chinese language, derived its name from its historic association with spices. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, Hong Kong was part of Dongguan, Guangdong province. In Ming, the place became a harbor that was a pit-stop for the transportation of spices from Dongguan, hence the name “fragrant harbor”. Allegedly, spices cultivation was the source of livelihood for many people in Hong Kong. Soon, the local spices became a tribute to the imperial court. Though the spices industry slipped into decline in the years to come, the name “fragrant harbor” remained.
