Tokyo, Japan

The Japanese capital is Asia's largest city and the world's second largest city. Located in the northern part of the Kanto Plain on Honshu Island, Tokyo and the cities surrounding it make up the world's largest cosmopolitan district. Formerly known as Edo, it has been the de facto seat of government since 1603.

Tokyo is a city that pulses with modern dynamism. Here, you can always find the most cutting-edge designs and the trendiest stuff. But it's also a showpiece of quintessential Japanese traditions. Meiji-jingu is still the venue for wedding ceremonies exactly like those of centuries ago; kimono-donning women are a common sight on the streets of Ginza.

Getting around

  • Sensoji

Behind a huge red lantern called Kaminarimon (Gate of Thunder) is a 140-meter-long pebble-paved path which leads to the hall dedicated to Kwanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion and mercy. Today, the temple is a venue for various events throughout the year, including the New Year Gala.

  • Imperial Palace

It's where Japan's Emperor dwells. The main hall, the heart of the complex, is where most of the activities of the royal family take place. Seimon Ishibashi bridge which spans a moat makes the most rewarding viewing.

  • Tokyo Skytree

At 634 meters high, it's a new glittering landmark of Tokyo silhouetted against the azure sky. The observatories at 350 meters and 450 meters afford panoramic views of the entire city.

  • Ueno Park

Ancient sites dating back to the eras of Edo and Meiji and modern buildings including a museum, a gallery, a zoo and an aquarium are sprinkled in this shade-splashed park.

  • Tokyo National Museum

It boasts a remarkable collection of 89,000 artifacts, including 100 national treasures. Artworks and unearthed relics are on display in different theme halls.

  • Miyazaki Museum

It's a dream world that would leave any animation fan engrossed and entranced. It's curated by Miyazaki, a writer, animist and manga artist all rolled into one. Only 2,400 visitors are allowed access every day. Reservations are needed three days in advance for visitors from other countries.
