Regulations on the Items Taken into and out of Thailand |
Visitors carrying the following items do not need to declare and can use the airport customs' green channel (NOTHING TO DECLARE) for customs clearance: reasonable quantities of personal items whose total value does not exceed THB 10,000 (excluding restricted or prohibited items), 200 cigarettes (a carton) or 250 grams of tobacco (or cigars), or up to 250 grams of cigarettes and cigars put together; up to 1 liter of liqueur or spirits. For a group of visitors, each individual visitor should buy and carry duty-free cigarettes and alcohol separately - it is not allowed to put cigarettes and alcohol of a number of visitors into the baggage of one individual visitor, and place it under the custody of one single visitor immediately after customs clearance. As the law of Thailand stands, such practice is illegal - a number of persons putting their separately purchased duty-free cigarettes and alcohol together in the baggage of one person is considered the equivalent of one person carrying cigarettes and alcohol that exceed the prescribed quantities, and the items carried will be confiscated and the person carrying such items face a hefty fine and even imprisonment.
Visitors who carry the following items shall declare to the customs, and use the red channel (GOOD TO DECLARE) for customs clearance: unreasonable quantities of personal items, items whose value exceed THB 10000 or items used for commercial and trade purposes; items for which export license should be obtained from Thailand's competent authorities like Buddha statues, cultural relics, religious artworks, plants, animals, pets, animal products, weapons, ammunitions, etc. Visitors who fail to declare items that should be declared face a fine that is 4 times the sum of the value of the items carried and the payable tax, or an imprisonment term of over 10 years, or both, and the items that are not declared will be confiscated. It is strictly forbidden to carry the following items into and out of Thailand: anesthetics, drugs, pornographic materials and books, counterfeit money, counterfeit and pirated goods and protected animals. As Thailand law stands, any person who carries or smuggles drugs could face death penalty. So, in no circumstance should you carry any items or luggage for someone else, lest there be drugs or other contrabands in such luggage.
Visitors who carry plants, animals, pets or animal products into Thailand shall apply in advance to the Thailand Department of Agriculture. If such application is approved, an animal and plant quarantine certificate will be issued, which can be used for customs clearance.
There are no restrictions on the amount of Thai currency carried into Thailand. But the amount of Thai currency taken out of the country shall not exceed THB 50,000. It is allowed to take any foreign currency out of Thailand, but the amount shall not exceed USD 20,000, otherwise, it must be declared to the customs.
Visa |
Tourist visa is required for a short travel to Thailand. Materials required are as follows:
One completed tourist visa application form, one 2-inch photo and the original copy of the Letter of Guarantee in English issued by the applicant's employer. The Letter of Guarantee should include the name of the applicant, the purpose of visit to Thailand and length of stay in Thailand. It should claim that the applicant must return to China on time after travel. The Letter must be printed on a piece of paper with the letterhead which is the name of the employer. The Letter must show the employer's address and telephone number, the seal of the employer, and the signature and title of the person who signs on it. Round-trip air ticket with confirmed ticket reservations to and from Thailand, a photocopy of the ticket, and the photocopy of the passport should be provided. If the applicant travels with a child who is under 16 years of age, the original copy and photocopy of the child's birth certificate in English or the Letter of Notarization of the child's relationship with the applicant should be provided.
Landing visa:
Thailand allows visitors from some countries who didn't have time to apply for a visa in advance to obtain a landing visa. Chinese passport qualifies, provided that the validity period of the passport is 6 months or more. But, according to the Chinese customs regulations, Chinese passport holders cannot leave China without a visa to any third country. So, the idea of leaving China for Thailand without a Thai visa and expecting to obtain a landing visa of Thailand upon arrival would be impractical. But visitors can leave China via Hong or Macao for Thailand if they don't have a Thai visa, as they don't need a visa to a third country in order to leave China. In that case, they can obtain a Thai landing visa.
Customs |
Thailand is a Buddhist country. When visiting religious sites, you should take off your shoes and hat before entering temples with Buddhist statues. Don't enter when there's a religious gathering inside. You should be dressed properly. Sleeveless shirt, short jacket and short skirt above knees are inappropriate. In addition, women must not touch monks. If a woman needs to pass something to a monk, she should first pass the item to the man on the ground, who will in turn pass it to the monk. Each Buddha statue, large or small, damaged or in good condition, is considered sacred.
