Regulations on the Items Taken into and out of UAE

According to customs regulations, each incoming visitor is allowed to bring 2 bottles of liquor or 2 boxes of beer, 400 cigarettes, 50 cigars and 1 kg of tobacco. Visitors who come from cholera-infected and epidemic regions are forbidden to bring vegetables, fruits and cultured pearls. Incoming and outgoing visitors who carry large amounts of cash (over 10,000 U.S. dollars or 40,000 dirhams or the equivalent of other currencies) must declare.

UAE attaches great importance to the protection of intellectual property. Don't take any pirated discs. In addition, UAE police keeps a watchful eye on smuggling. The visitor who carries excessive quantity of medicines will face imprisonment. The English instructions, doctor's prescription and purchase invoices of medicines must be always ready for check.

When entering UAE, visitors are strictly prohibited to carry such contrabands as drugs, weapons, pornography publications, VCD, video tapes, pain killers or other items that require special approval.

 

Visa

Visa applicant should submit related materials to UAE immigration authorities through a sponsor (like hotel, travel agency) registered in the UAE, and the visa is sent to the applicant through the sponsor by fax. The applicant can enter UAE with his/her visa and passport. Before applying for a visa, the applicant should learn about detailed visa requirements from the sponsor or through the website of UAE immigration authorities and get all related materials ready. Delegations for government affairs can apply for visas at the UAE embassies and consulates in foreign countries.

When entering UAE, visitors must be subjected to iris scanning and passport/visa check. Visitors must leave within the required number of days of stay indicated on the visa. You will face a fine of USD 28 for every day you overstay. You must fill in an exit card and submit it to the immigration together with your passport.

 

Customs

UAE is an Islamic country, and Muslims are prohibited to eat pork and drink alcohol. Foreigners can buy alcohol at specified hotels. Every Muslim say prayers five times a day in office, at home or in flight. Saying prayers is a very serious thing to do, and when a Muslim says prayers, don’t talk to him or her. In the holy month of Ramadan, after sunrise and before sunset, it’s forbidden to drink water, smoke and eat on the street.

The Arabs think the left hand is not clean, so you should use your right hand to receive and give things. Of course, bulky items can be presented with both hands.

In big events, men and women do not mingle. Arabian women generally do not shake hands with men, and men just smile and nod to women. Don’t appear too warm to women. If a woman puts out her hand at first, you can shake hands with her. At an event, men and women can talk. Never take a photo of a women wearing a black robe.
