Regulations on the Items Taken into and out of Japan

In recent years, the Japanese government has introduced very tough quarantine regulations on imported foods, non-fish meat products, fruits, plants and plant seeds. Meat products are prohibited to enter the country.

Items to be taken into Japan must be declared to the customs in writing. Visitors whose items exceed the tax-exempt limits are required to fill in the applicable declaration form.

Tax-exempt items carried by adults (merchandises and samples of merchandize do not qualify for tax exemption policies and are taxable): 3 bottles of alcohol; 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco (the quantities of tax-exempt items double for those who reside outside Japan); perfume: 2 ounces. Other items whose value computed at the market going rate exceeds JPY 200,000 are taxable.

Visa

Visitors must apply for a visa to visit Japan. China (except regions of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) has not obtained visa exemption from Japan, so visitors to Japan from Mainland China must apply for a visa regardless of their intended length of stay.

Visa application can be submitted to the travel agencies or visa agencies designated by the embassy and consulates of Japan in China (Embassy of Japan in China, Consulate General of Japan in Shanghai, Consulate General of Japan in Guangzhou, Consulate General of Japan in Shenyang, Consulate General of Japan in Chongqing, Representative Office of Japan in Dalian and Consulate General of Japan in Qingdao). Applications that are not submitted through such designated travel agencies or visa agencies are not accepted by embassy and consulates.

Visa applications can be submitted at 9:00-11:30, Monday to Friday. Tel: 010-6532-9329 (visa); email: ryoji@pk.mofa.go.jp. For the application submission times and contacts of consulates, please visit the website of the embassy.

Japan issues many types of visa, like short-term residence visa for the Chinese visitors whose spouse is a Japanese, short-term business visa, short-term multiple-entry visa, tourist visa, medical residence visa, among others. For more, visit the website of the embassy of Japan in China.

Customs

Japanese tend to bow when meeting each other. The etiquette surrounding bowing, including the length and depth of bow and the number of times bows are performed, is exceedingly complex. When performing bows, people don’t hold anything in hand or wear a hat on head. Sometimes, the Japanese bow while shaking hands. Generally, Japanese women, especially women in rural areas, just bow.

In Japan, garbage is collected by types. People get specified garbage out in specified days. Batteries, furniture and electrical appliances are disposed of in ways different from those for general wastes. Be sure to check with your neighbors or government units.
