Mongolia, Ulan Bator

Ulan Bator would be nothing without the undulating green ocean of grassland around it. It's a city that has evolved to become a gem on the charming meadows. It's like a man protecting the beautiful woman he loves and is supported by that beautiful woman that always stands behind him.

The capital of Mongolia is a 300-year-old city. It has many sightseeing options ranging from historical sites representing different periods of its history to modern museums, parks and nightclubs catering to different tastes.

Getting around

  • Mongolia National Museum

This facility is devoted to the history of Mongolia and the powerful leaders of the Mongolian Empire. Exhibits tend to be text- and photography-heavy.

  • Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan

Built between 1893 and 1903, the six-temple complex houses a lot of Buddhist artworks, including sculpture and Thangka paintings. Bogd Khan, or emperor of Mongolia, lived here for 20 years.

  • Choijin Lama Museum

The complex consists of four temples originally inhabited by Choijin Lama Luvsankhaidav who was the brother of the ruler Bogd Khan and a state oracle at the time. It was built in 1904 by Luvsankhaidav to pay tribute to China's Qing emperor Guangxu.

  • Gandantegchinlen Monastery

The Tibetan name of the Tibetan-style Buddhist monastery means “Great Place of Complete Joy”. It was built in 1838 and today is the venue of important annual religious events.

  • Music

Mongolians are expert singers and dancers. In the city, you can always relate to the traditional strains and modern heavy metal. Recent years have seen Mongolia's music scene rise rapidly.

  • Foods

Roasted lamb, grilled meat and stone barbecue are all Mongolia's tasteful creations. Big chunks of meat are boiled and then cut with knife or torn off by hand, to be washed down with tart horse milk wine.
